The Second Comforter:
Conversing with the Lord through the
Veil
This is the first full-length book by Denver C. Snuffer, Jr.,
although he has written on legal subjects for years. A faithful
Mormon and gifted teacher, Mr. Snuffer’s exposition on this subject
is currently the most complete treatment of the subject ever
attempted.
The Second Comforter is Christ. In the fourteenth chapter of the
Gospel of John, Christ promises to send to His disciples the
Comforter (Holy Ghost). In addition, however, He also promises to
come Himself and visit those who follow Him. This promise of Christ
visiting His disciples is the promise of the Second Comforter.
In this book, the author explores the full import of these things,
from foundation to the top. The entire breadth and sweep of the
promise is contained in this readable, engaging text. The book
speaks to a very profound process in the LDS faith. One which was
originally discussed forthrightly in the beginnings of the
Latter-day restoration (among the first generation in the early
1800's) but which has lapsed almost into obscurity today. The
subject is revisited in a forthright way, in the hopes of bringing
this subject back to the forefront of Latter-day Saint thought.
Reactions, even by non-Latter-day Saints suggest the book has a
potentially wider audience. It may also serve to answer questions
about the Latter-day Saint faith for those who consider it
contro-versial, but whose understanding of the Mormons is limited.
This book explores the very deepest of meanings of the LDS faith. It
touches upon the faith's foundational scriptures, ordinances, Temple
rites and symbolism in a way which takes you into the path of
receiving the "fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ." That phrase
("the fullness") is a term which is explored and expounded in the
text.
The book's title is The Second Comforter: Conversing with the Lord
through the Veil, refers to a singular phenomena in the Latter-day
Saint faith. The founding prophet of the Latter-day Saint faith,
Joseph Smith, took these verses and explained that Christ was
promising to come and visit personally with those who followed Him.
Not a spiritual visit, but an actual appearance as a part of the
Gospel process. Christ promises: "I will not leave you comfortless,
but I will come unto you." Joseph taught that the notion this is an
appearance to you in the heart is a false sectarian notion. The
promise here is that Christ will appear to those who prepare
themselves.
The book is a description of the process of finding a "fullness" and
receiving a visit from Christ. The title is referring to the
appearance of Christ as the "Second Comforter." This term will be
recognized by Latter-day Saints.
The other portion of the title is a reference to Latter-day Saint
Temple rites. The symbolism of the return to God's presence is
enacted in Latter-day Saint Temple rites in ritual and symbolism.
However the symbolic rite is a foreshadowing of the actual process.
This book takes the reader through the entire lay of Latter-day
restoration processes in a step-by-step description of how one goes
from where they are to the point where they may pass through the
veil hiding the heavens and receive an audience with Christ.
Some reactions from those who have read the book include:
"I can't tell you how exciting your book is to me. ... I am very
involved in your well-written book and believe very strongly in all
I am reading."
"Very powerful book."
"I'm thoroughly enjoying your knowledge re Mormonism. Your honest
and sincere presentation should be received very well."
"This book will be a treasure for many."
"This just gets better and better."
"Well written and most meaningful."
"It's been a delightful journey for me and my personal prayers have
become much more strengthened by your words and your expression of
your faith and humility...I am not an authority on any religion but
am one of a ‘childlike’ faith - I have also learned to preface my
prayers with ‘If God wills it’ in lieu of bargaining with the
Savior! ...And now your book, and other dear nudges from Heaven, now
and again. I do thank you deeply for the privilege and I think your
book will be a treasure for many young Saints and undoubtedly for
every older Saint that reads it. This is a major work for the
Mormons and a serious achievement."
Mr. Snuffer has said, about the book: “I still remain of the view
that the commercial success/failure of the book is not meaningful to
me. I want some few people for whom the text may serve as an actual
guide in their lives to be able to find it. The rest who may read it
are more voyeurs than seriously benefited from reading it. I suppose
it may help answer some people's curiosity about Mormonism. And it
may serve, too, to answer people's questions about whether Mormonism
has a deeper theological basis for its existence. Yet they are not
the people for whom the book was written. It was written to serious,
thoughtful and spiritually inclined Latter-day Saints and they are
the ones whom I would like to target for buying the book.”
This important book ought to be considered by anyone who is
interested in understanding the Latter-day Saint faith. The
“Mormons” as understood by many people, take on a different and more
spiritual aspect when this book is considered. Anyone who is curious
about the Mormon faith will be well served by taking the journey
this book invites all to take.
The book is 400 pages, building from the first chapters through the
last, foundation upon foundation, line upon line, precept upon
precept. The subject is exposed in a progression of exposition in
which the reader’s comprehension is aided by useful illustrations to
make points clear.
There are a handful of essential Mormon books. This is one of them.
